Using a blower door, the space is pressurized. After that, a computer controls the entire process including the temperature, pressure, humidity, and distribution of sealant within sealant within the space during the process.
With the AeroBarrier process, you see results in real time. You have complete control over your desired level of air tightness and can achieve any level required. At the end of the process, a final blower door test is run to verify the air sealing results. AeroBarrier then provides a Certificate of Completion that shows pre and post leakage.
After the air sealing is complete, work can resume in the space within 30 minutes. At that time, clean up of all equipment and removal of all tape and coverings can occur.
Prep the area by covering any openings that won’t be sealed. This includes taping or covering any designed openings or finished horizontal surfaces within the space. Emitters are then set up throughout the area to be air sealed.
The equipment is then set up. This includes blower door, emitters, hoses, and the AeroBarrier machine.
AeroBarrier is an interior applied air sealing system that seals all building envelope leaks up to 1/2". The waterborne acrylic sealant is applied by pressuring a targeted building area, then spraying the aerosolized sealant into the pressurized space. The sealant is self-guided to the edges of visible and invisible leaks creating a seal, not by packing the gap but by accumulating a crossed the surface of leaks. Designed to deposit in leaks and not on vertical surfaces, the sealant is applied within 60-90 minutes and dries before system cleanup is complete, allowing construction to resume shortly after the process is complete with little to no impact on standard construction schedules. The system measures the envelope leakage in real-time, enabling the system to dial-in specific requirements for air leakage and guarantee the results.

The sealant is ultra-low VOC and because it is inert there is no chemical reaction needed to form a seal meaning there is no off-gassing. AeroBarrier seals holes as large as 1⁄2”, and as tiny as a human hair. Aerosol sealing is extremely effective at sealing narrow gaps and extremely small holes that are typically not cost-effective or are missed during manual sealing.
No. During application, if a technician has to enter the space while it is being sealed they wear personal protective equipment (PPE). After the sealing is complete, the area is safe to enter without protective gear within 20 to 30 minutes.
This depends on the size of the home and your desired ACH50 goals, but most projects are completed in 4-6 hours. This includes the time from arrival on site, through prep and installation of AeroBarrier sealant, to clean up and completion.
The area needs to be aired out for 30 minutes after the sealing is complete. This is done by opening doors and windows while running the fan. But work can resume in the space as soon as the sealing equipment is removed and 30 min has passed.
The key thing to consider when preparing a home for AeroBarrier is to determine if the house can be pressurized. This means all the windows and doors must be installed and any other openings in the home can be closed or otherwise sealed shut to perform the test. Our technicians will then tape over all any portions of the windows and doors that we do not want to seal shut. We will also protect mechanical equipment by taping over supply and return grills so no sealant enters the HVAC ductwork. Lastly, we will cover over any exhaust vents to the exterior of the house. This could include bath fans, range hood exhaust, fireplace flues and your dryer vents.
Although the sealing equipment can heat the air as it seals, there are practical limits to aerosol sealing when it comes to weather conditions. Ideal outdoor temperature is 40˚F or higher. Sealing can be done when the temperature is below 40˚F, but additional steps may be required.
The AeroBarrier system uses a standard blower door to measure envelope leakage during the process. The blower door calibrated to meet ASTM Standard E779, E1554, CGSB-149.10-M86, EN 13829, ATTMA Technical Standard 1, NFPA 2001, RESNET and USACE.
The AeroBarrier sealant is based on a waterborne acrylic that has been used as a fluid-applied permeable air barrier for many years. The sealant is GREENGUARD Gold certified and has been tested according to various ASTM standards and NFPA 285, for fire spread, smoke production, adhesion, antifungal properties, tensile strength, etc.. The sealant is low VOC and has no off-gassing.

AeroBarrier modifies its blower door by adding a heater onto the fan. This allows the system to achieve optimal room temperature and humidity during the sealing process, allowing more sealant to be sprayed into the space for a faster, more efficient sealing process.
AeroBarrier may be applied at any time between rough-in and prior to occupancy. Although, the ideal time to apply AeroBarrier is rough-in or post-drywall. Other factors that affect install is the build process (i.e. vented or unvented attics) and the site’s climate zone.
ACH50 is the abbreviation for air changes per hour at 50 pascals (Pa) pressure differential. This is the most common metric used to determine the air tightness and energy efficiency of a home. It represents that total number of times the full volume of air inside a building can be sucked out (or pushed out) of the house at 50 pascals of pressure. In most climates zones where we install AeroBarrier, a decent ACH50 is between 3.0 and 5.0 with the lower number representing a tighter envelope. We often seal below 3.0 for our customers that want greatly improved efficiency. Once you get to 0.6 ACH50, you have reached Passive House certification levels that represent truly remarkable energy efficiency.
A home that is too tight can be a bad thing if the space isn’t designed for that level of tightness. The popular saying “build tight, ventilate right” applies here and works both ways. Building tight without proper ventilation could cause issues with indoor air quality (IAQ) in the space. On the flip side, a leaky home with proper ventilation could cause the mechanical system to not work as it is designed. Because AeroBarrier can dial in the desired tightness of the space it removes the guesswork and ensures that the home is only as tight as the space is designed for.
